Business Strategy

The calcium-binding proteins developed by Quincy Bioscience will be marketed for prevention and/or treatment of various neurodegenerative disorders because of aequorin’s neuroprotective activity. The company plans to target the food supplement market (e.g., dietary supplements), the pharmaceutical market (e.g., persons with or at risk for neurodegenerative diseases), and the intellectual property market (e.g., other companies that wish to license Quincy Bioscience aequorin technology for use in their products).

Business Strategy

It is estimated that 5.6-6.6 million people in the U.S. suffer from neurodegenerative disorders, and thousands more are stricken each year. The market is not fully established but is estimated to be several billion dollars. There are currently no effective alternate treatments for these diseases. The company plans to market its therapeutics through strategic relationships with larger established partners, such as pharmaceutical companies.

Quincy Bioscience intends to develop products based on aequorin and market them to people with, or at risk for, neurodegenerative diseases. The market opportunity facing the company is very significant for the following reasons:

  • Millions of people in the U.S. currently suffer from neurodegenerative diseases
  • The number of people with such diseases is expected to increase substantially in coming years as the large baby boom generation grows older
  • Existing dietary supplements and therapeutics which target neurodegenerative diseases generally have very limited effectiveness. In many cases they address symptoms but not the underlying cause of the disease
  • There is already an established market of $1.5 billion/year in the U.S. for Alzheimer’s disease therapeutics. The Alzheimer’s therapeutics market within the top 7 countries (US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Japan) is already established at $3.3 billion/year
  • If a new dietary supplement or therapeutic with significantly improved efficacy over existing products were to be introduced into the market, it would have the potential to capture an ever increasing share of the market over time

The entire dietary supplement marketplace eclipsed $20 billion per year in 2005. In effect, the size of the market for products to control neurodegenerative diseases will be expanding, yet present products have not proven to be very effective. This is the market opportunity facing aequorin, which Quincy Bioscience intends to introduce for prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and as an age-fighting dietary supplement.
